Top 10 Worst Foods For Thyroid Disease

2. Fatty foods

Fatty foods

Stephanie Lee, MD, Ph.D., an associate professor of endocrinology, nutrition, and diabetes at Boston Medical Center, is finding that fat in foods can impair the body’s ability to absorb thyroid hormone replacement treatments.

Research from the American Thyroid Association is published in the journal. If your thyroid isn’t working correctly, you may be prescribed a thyroid hormone replacement taken orally or by injection.

Fatty foods can lead to numerous weight-related problems, including weight gain and type 2 diabetes. Fatty foods also have been shown to disrupt the body’s ability to absorb thyroid hormone replacement medicines.

Thyroid patients who eat many fatty foods are more likely to have their thyroid condition worsen. These foods include things like vegetable oils, margarine, and fried foods.

3. Processed Food

Processed food is loaded with sodium, which can be toxic to your thyroid. Processed food has more sodium than fresh food. A single sandwich has approximately 1,000mg of sodium, whereas a single potato has only about 18mg.

So if your body thinks it’s not getting enough sodium, it will force the thyroid to release too much thyroid hormone. When the thyroid hormone levels go too high, it can cause hypothyroidism.

This is a condition where your thyroid is underactive, leading to weight gain, fatigue, depression, hair loss, and heart disease. So, what should you do? If possible, eat fresh food. If you can’t, try to cut back on processed and packaged foods.
